TEN pins were slayed like dragons on Wednesday as an army of fundraisers made sure that St George’s Day was a knight to remember. The Fun Fest Bowling Challenge saw a wide variety of teams at Premier Bowl, Ocean Plaza, compete for trophies sponsored by Rewardaward at High Park, with a total of £1,072 raised for Southport-based charities including Queenscourt Hospice, Southport Lifeboat and Southport PHAB Club. Southport Scooters and the Foghorn Bar were among teams proudly wearing red and white attire, with the venue decked out in St George’s flags, bunting and banners and with staff donning fancy dress in honour of England’s patron saint. Duty manager Kim Johnson was fantastic in making the event run well, with colleague and fellow manager Chris Booker keeping the scores. Drew Molloy, Chris Molloy, Pete Molloy and Ant Meehan walked off with the Rewardaward team trophy with an impressive score of 1,129 after two games while Stuart Hellawell from All White Taxis recorded the highest individual score of 342. Adrian Hughes director of All White Taxis, said: "Stuart’s a very good amateur! We were celebrating his win on Wednesday night. "It was a genuinely good atmosphere, there was a nice mix of teams there some from local businesses, others from charities, and other orgnanisations. "It was good fun, although there was some competitive spirit among some of us! As well as enjoying it we managed to raise some money for local charities as well, which is all the better." A number of teams and players returned from last year, including the Royal Mail Rogues, the Wolfpack and several supporters of Queenscourt Hospice, and are already looking forward to next year’s event. A wide variety of other teams competing included those from: Southport House Dental Practice, Diane Lang independent financial services, KGV College, Paymentshield, Bar Velvet, Bakers Bar, Woodvale Round Table, Fairbanks, Southport Visiter, TK Maxx and the Cleveland Cafe, while Amecy Semley was there with family and friends celebrating her 18th birthday. The event was launched by the Southport Swords morris dancers, who performed their ritual slaying of the dragon. Premier Bowl area manager Cheryl Morley said: "It was absolutely superb. We were thrilled with the whole evening, and I am proud of all my staff. "It was great to celebrate St George’s Day - we love doing themed nights, we’ve done pirates, we’ve done Elvis, but we really enjoyed this one. "We’re looking forward to next year now!"
