Road Test

by Maxine Ashford, drivingforce.uk.net

SELDOM does an all-round package of power, performance and devilishly good looks emerge in one car - Mercedes-Benz has just changed that trend.

For the SLK 200 is unbelievably streamlined with jaw-dropping curves that are guaranteed to bring out the green-eyed-monster in any bystander. But it has somehow combined this stunning exterior with awesome power capabilities to produce a blistering edge-of-the-seat ride.

Admittedly, the SLK is certainly not for the faint-hearted and you won’t spot many on the kids’ school run either. For anyone who splashes out the £35,000 asking price for an SLK will have to enjoy the finer things in life and driving in this little gem is definitely one of them.

From the second you take your seat behind the wheel, the sheer build quality is apparent at every turn and the comfort levels are so good, the seats could almost have been designed specifically for you.

The list of first class features cannot fail to impress and includes air conditioning, tinted glass, an integrated six-disc CD changer with MP3 and iPod compatibility, a multi-function steering wheel in black nappa leather, heated leather seats and plenty more besides.

But looks and creature comforts aside, this vehicle is really all about performance, and believe me, it can perform.

In and around town it seems to cruise almost menacingly through the congested traffic with the gentle rumble of the engine acting as a reminder of the power at your disposal.

And then when you hit the open road, the SLK bursts into life with the 1.8-litre engine delivering plenty of power and the tightly-positioned gears offering ample response.

Road-holding is exceptional and all-round visibility is actually quite good considering the vehicle’s roadster status.

Another bonus is the roof can be raised or lowered in seconds at the push of a button so you can enjoy open-top motoring at its very best.

Mercedes has crammed the SLK with a comprehensive list of safety features including anti-lock brakes with brake assist, electronic stability programme with acceleration skid control, roll-over protection, numerous airbags and much more.

All in all, the SLK is the perfect all-round package for the motorist who enjoys a little quality in their life. As for me, I’m going to check my six numbers again!
