'Breast is best' for new mums

MEN in south Sefton are being targeted in an eye-catching new campaign promoting breastfeeding.

Posters appearing in bus stops and pubs aim to help persuade mums that 'breast is best.'

The campaign, supported by South Sefton Primary Care Trust, is based on the 'Guinness is Good For You' campaign and aims to break down the barriers that put some women off.

Kate Hutton, health promotion specialist at Sefton Health Improvement Support Service, said: "It may seem odd to target men with a campaign about breastfeeding, but from talking to mums we know that what men think often has a big impact on whether they breastfeed or not.

"It isn't just about their opinions either - of course new dads can't do the breastfeeding themselves.

"But by being supportive of their partner they can play a big role in ensuring their baby gets breast milk for the best possible start in life.

"Hopefully, the campaign will encourage new dads, and men in general, to realise that breastfeeding is a hugely positive thing for everyone involved."

Dr Grace Edwards, Consultant Mid-wife Public Health, added: "Breast milk is the healthiest food available for a baby. It helps protect the child from illness and provides lots of important nutrients. It is also a wonderful way of forming a bond with your new baby." The campaign coincides with 'National Breastfeeding Awareness Week,' which encourages mums to give breastfeeding a try.
