Waterloo’s Plaza Cinema to celebrate its £55k revamp

Nov 6 2008

by Lyndsay Young, Crosby Herald

A REVAMP costing £55,000 to the front of the Plaza Community Cinema has been completed.

It now boasts a huge lights display and an art deco- themed entrance, which will be officially unveiled at a switch-on next Tuesday.

A National Lottery People’s Millions grant has funded the work to improve the appearance of this iconic landmark in Waterloo.

Residents and people across Merseyside cast their votes for the cinema to be granted the money.

Janet Dunn, chair of Plaza trustees, said: “Winning the People’s Millions Big Lottery grant has given the Plaza Community Cinema such a tremendous boost. The whole project has been so exciting, not only for the staff and volunteers but also for the local community. What a wonderful indication of the support the Plaza has in the community and the wider area of Merseyside, a big thank-you to everyone who has supported us.”

The work, which has restored the cinema to its former glory, has included a redesign of the outside canopy, new signage to promote film information as well as dramatic new lighting.

Around 50,000 vehicles pass the cinema every day and staff are hoping the makeover will attract more customers while raising its profile.

The switch-on will take place at 7.30pm, where a special guest will illuminate the new-look cinema.

A special night of archive film from the 1920s to the 1950s entitled Housewives Choice will also be presented.

Local reminiscence artist, Jackie Waters will also present an exhibition of period memorabilia including a flat iron, 1926 calendar, land girls postcards and lots more.

Tickets for the programme are £4 and are available from the cinema box office.
