Five-day arts and theatre festival will mark Titanic centenary in Waterloo

Feb 9 2012

by Jason Roberts, Crosby Herald

A FIVE-DAY festival marking the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic will come to Waterloo this summer.

Liverpool and the Titanic brings together five days of live theatre, live music and a brand new historical exhibition, all created and curated locally.

Taking place at Old Christ Church, ten new short plays will be performed live, alongside ten new audio plays.

The new plays will all be written by local young people, in association with the Theatre in the Rough Festival and Merseyside Maritime Museum. As well as being performed, they will also be published in an anthology.

An exhibition, featuring original artefacts including the dress uniform of the Captain of the Carpathia and contemporary newspapers, will also be open to the public.

And the week is rounded off by a special performance from acclaimed local folk band The Mersey Rigger, performing songs from their Titanic-themed musical, Queen of the Ocean.

A liner with enduring links to Sefton, organisers felt it was only fitting to host the festival in Waterloo.

From the home of Bruce Ismay, the director of the White Star Line, to the stamping ground of one of its tragic musicians, the memory of the Titanic is part of the memory of the borough itself.

Sefton’s Theatre in the Rough Festival has received £12,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to fund the exciting project.

Sara Hilton, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund North West, said “We at HLF are delighted to be able to support Theatre in the Rough and their plans to commemorate the centenary of the Titanic.

“The Titanic plays an important part of in the wider story of shipping that is so important to Sefton and Merseyside, and this project will give younger generations a wonderful opportunity to explore their local heritage.”

Liverpool and the Titanic runs from July 3-7, at Old Christ Church, in Waterloo. All events are free of charge.

Writers and actors are being invited to take part in the festival. Local contributions are also being welcomed to form part of the historical exhibition. For more information, visit www.theatre intherough.com
