TWO quick-thinking neighbour-hood caretakers have been praised for preventing a fire at a pensioner's home.
Chris Moss and Ged Brown were on patrol on Netherton's Sefton Estate when they heard a smoke alarm coming from a house.
The pair, who work for Sefton Security Services, tracked down a neighbour with a key to the house and on entering discovered a pan of food burning on the stove.
The fire service was called and attended to the elderly resident who was unharmed.
Tony Waterman, of Sefton Security Services, said: "Chris and Ged reacted very quickly and we are delighted with their calm and professional approach.
"They were able to use their fire awareness training and their actions helped avert a potentially serious incident."
Following a successful pilot scheme, caretakers now cover 13 Neighbourhood Action Group areas in South Sefton.
Working in pairs, they keep in touch with local communities and report issues to service providers, landlords and other agencies.
Mr Waterman said: "Our neighbourhood caretakers want to make a difference in their communities and are always keen to help residents wherever they can."
