SHAMELESS star Tina Malone officially opened Netherton’s newest community garden.

The Liverpool-born actress joined mums to unveil the venture at The Grange Children’s Centre in Stoneyfield.

The project, in partnership with Hugh Baird College, will run for 30 weeks.

Malone, who has previously delivered drama sessions to children at the centre, said she is proud of her links with the venue.

She said: “I’ve always liked to give something back to the community and that’s why I’m taking part in the new garden project.

“This is a fantastic facility for the local community, which enables them to get enthusiastic about gardening.

“It helps keep parents fit and gives them a real sense of achievement when they finally see the vegetables fully grown.

“The authorities want to keep 10 out of 19 of these centres open and it is shameful that some of them have to close because they give so much to the community.”

The garden is aimed at parents of children attending the centre and primary school and the local community.

Mum Danielle Berry, 23, from Netherton, said: “It’s a brilliant centre and mums and dads enjoy taking part in the activities here.”

Parents meet each Friday between 9am and noon to nurture the organic vegetables, such as carrots, beetroot and pumpkins.

At the end of 30 weeks, the garden will be handed over to the local community.

Headteacher Dan Hains said: “This is making excellent use of the wonderful grounds that we have here.”
