BURGLARS caused £10,000 of damage while raiding a Bootle building for scrap metal.

Three men attempting to steal metal from a Sefton Council owned site in Hawthorne Road were caught red handed by police.

At South Sefton Magistrates Court on Tuesday, Terrence Stephen Garvey, 25, Terrence Lee Garvey, 47, and Ian Murphy, 47, pleaded guilty to the burglary.

On Thursday, September 18, the men climbed over the gate of a site in Hawthorne Road and entered a rear building.

Although the building was largely disused it contained an active Scottish Power substation.

Armed with tools including a pick axe and an angle grinder, they had been extracting scrap metal but also ended up cutting through a number of live electrical cables.

Scottish Power has estimated the offenders caused £10,000 of damage.

Police officers were called to the incident and had to climb over gates and spotted a number of metal coils outside the building at the rear of the site.

They caught two of the men inside before Terrence Stephen Garvey emerged from the underground area of the building covered in oil.

The men admitted to officers that they were looking for scrap metal to sell and earn some extra cash.

The men, who are all on income support, all live in Marled Hey, Stockbridge Village, and travelled to the site in Bootle to steal the metal.

Magistrate Val Jarvis told the defendants: “We are going to adjourn your case for an all options report with a view to custody.”

The men will be brought back to Bootle Magistrates Court for sentencing on Tuesday, November 11.

They were bailed under the conditions that they must not enter Hawthorne Road in Bootle or any scrap yard in Merseyside.
