PLANS for a new Asda store in Bootle have moved a step closer.
Members of Sefton Council’s planning committee last week gave the thumbs up to more detailed proposals for the contemporary design of the new supermarket.
Councillors granted authority to planning officers to approve some finer details of the scheme following further discussions with Asda in the weeks ahead.
The proposed development, off Bank Road and Strand Road, will be a modern, eco-friendly building incorporating a biomass boiler and solar panels.
It is also hoped the heating can be generated through a ground source pump at the town centre superstore.
The building will feature timber cladding while the roof will have a zig zag appearance incorporating solar panels.
Outline plans for the new supermarket were granted in September 2005 and rubber-stamped by the Government Office for the North West in May 2006.
As part of the scheme, the existing Territorial Army headquarters on the site will be re-located to modern premises off Netherton Way, near Savio High School.
Planning committee chairman, Cllr Ian Moncur, said: “Retail experts have indicated that this sort of development could provide a real boost to Bootle town centre.
“The new store will create hundreds of new jobs while incorporating the very latest technology to provide renewable energy on site.
“I am pleased to see this exciting scheme moving forward.”
