Bootle neighbourhood living in fear of house burglaries

Jan 12 2012

by Mark Johnson, Bootle Times

MEMBERS of a Bootle neighbourhood have called for extra police protection after a spate of burglaries.

Thirty break-ins were recorded in December and 12 in November.

One Bianca Street resident is so terrified she has installed a metal security door and placed steel bars over her windows.

The woman, who did not want to named, said: “I feel like I am living in Walton prison. I do not feel safe here. I cannot leave because I will be burgled. Heroin addicts are breaking into the houses.”

Bianca Street resident Mark Irvine, who was burgled last week, said: “A burglar used a screw driver and a stick to get in – it went through the letter box to force the handle.

“They took the Xbox, which cost £349, a surround sound remote, jewellery and bank cards. I feel uneasy living here.”

The offender was in his late teens and wearing a dark T-shirt. Police carried out house-to-house inquiries and CCTV footage was taken.

Other streets to be targeted include Olivia Street and Downing Road, which suffered five break-ins in two months.

Police confirmed they are investigating burglaries and patrols have been stepped up.

Inspector Chris Burnham said: “We take all burglaries seriously and act on all information we receive.

“We work hard to prevent and detect burglaries, but it is important residents also make it more difficult for offenders to access their homesMany of the burglaries in December were opportunistic after residents left their front doors unlocked and offenders took advantage.”
