LITHERLAND could soon see building work begin on a new housing estate.

Bellway Homes North West has drawn up plans to build 56 homes on the site of the former Tannery on Hawthorne Road, near the new Tesco store.

Sefton Council’s planning committee is expected to give its go-ahead to the proposals next Wednesday (February 10).

The original scheme included 67 properties, but the apartments involved have now been dropped in favour of a mixture of bungalows, along with two and three-storey houses.

The site has been a local eyesore ever since approval for demolition of the Tannery was given in 1996.

The area will be further improved, with Bellway Homes being obliged to pay £76,877 towards Sefton’s Hawthorne Road Corridor Improvement Scheme, particularly the work proposed to the Hawthorne Road / Linacre Road junction.

In his report to councillors, Sefton planning and economic regeneration director, Andy Wallis, said: “Klondyke planning guidance indicates that the new housing should be provided so as to give a choice of house types and tenure and aims to achieve an overall mix of 30% rented properties and 70% private and shared ownership.

“These properties will be available in the first instance to people in the Klondyke area whose homes are proposed for demolition with priority given to people living in the phase one redevelopment area.

“The remaining houses and flats not required to re-house existing residents who wish to stay in the area will be available on the general market.”
