PRIZES have been handed out to pupils at Stanley High for their anti-litter art skills.
Environmental officers gave a number of presentations to pupils at the school highlighting the problems associated with litter.
The school on Fleetwood Road has since developed a comprehensive anti-litter action plan which is due to become school policy.
Pupils were also encouraged to volunteer to takepartina litter pick and to design posters which showthe consequences of litter. Nearly 100 posters were designed, and after much deliberation six artists were chosen as winners with Southport MP John Pugh presenting prizes to them.
The two overall winners, year 7 pupil Abbigale Fairchild and Year 8 pupil Emma McBlein, each received gift vouchers worth £50 with four runners-up prizes going to Nia Williams, Jessica Langley, Rachel Backshall and Gemma Smith.
Environmental projects officers, Chris Carlsen, said: "Litter is a real problem which affects everyone.
"By visiting the school we have provided all year groups in the school with educational presentation covering the social, economic and environ-mental impacts of litter.
"It is pleasing to see that Stanley High Sports College has taken responsibility for the litter that is being dropped by pupils in and around their school premises. Making people aware of the problems surrounding litter is one of the best ways of preventing it.
"This is shown by the excellent standard of posters drawn and painted by pupils highlighting the fact that dropping litter is simply not tolerated."
