Veterans Day in Prince's Park Jun 26 2008
EX-Servicemen from Formby will be welcome at Southport Veterans Day on Sunday, June 29, in Prince’s Park. As well as being a family day out, the event – from 9am to 4pm - aims to raise awareness for veterans and provide support information. Attending will be the armed forces and the emergency services. There will be dog display teams, fairground rides and brass bands. Steve Hawkshaw, a former Royal Navy officer from Ainsdale, has organised the event. He said the Imps, a youngsters’ motorbike display team who perform internationally, would be one of the most popular attractions. Their displays are made up of complicated moves, breath-taking fire jumps and pyramid formations. Mr Hawkshaw said it was important to raise awareness for veterans in towns like Formby. “We have so many young people out there in Iraq and other places. We have to keep these support services and associations going for them. “We are hoping eventually to build a Veteran Centre in Southport which could be used by the local associations and have a museum and restaurant in it.” more
