Formby Chess Club havve given themselves a lifeline in avoiding relegation Apr 24 2008
FORMBY first team gave themselves a good chance of avoiding the drop from the top division of the Merseyside Chess League when they took a point off Widnes in a 4-4 draw. Stewart Haslinger on top board, in what is believed to be the first ever Grandmaster clash in the Merseyside League, didn’t have enough of an advantage when a pawn up to prevent Nigel Davies securing the draw. Phil Fisher had a good win early on and, with skipper, Bob Platt, and Mike and Gareth Haslinger holding on to draws, it was left to Paul Jordan. Paul found a way to convert his plus to an advantageous endgame and then managed to make the winning move, his flag seemingly having been about to fall for about the last twenty moves. Formby are still bottom of Division 1, one point behind Liverpool and two behind Wallasey, whom they play in the last game of the season. Providing that Liverpool do not manage to beat second-placed Atticus, a win against Wallasey would ensure survival. more
